Stax -Upper Eastside

It’s been awhile, and for that we are sorry. We are back in the swing of things. Our first stop for 2020 is Stax sport bar. Located on the upper east side.

We have to say we were super impressed with Stax. With a variety of burgers on the menu it was hard to choose. First up is the Stax House burger. A double steakhouse blend patties, their signature slaw, American cheese, and butter pickles served on toasted brioche bun.

Our second choice was a Stax Your Own Burger. The burger starts with double 4-oz steakhouse blend patties , shredded iceberg, tomato, onion and your choice of Brioche or English muffin bun. We chose brioche bun. Then stacked it with caramelized onions and cheddar cheese.

These burgers were amazing! Succulent, flavorful, and cooked just right. Just downright delicious! The butter pickles added a surprisingly nice tangy taste to the Stax House burger. Great service and low key atmosphere. We highly recommend you check out Stax.

The Half Pint – Greenwich Village

What better way to end the year than a burger smothered in cheese. And for that we headed to The Half Pint.

This was the first time tasting Raclette cheese. The Raclette burger was deliciously made of short rib and brisket blend, bacon-onion jam, and raclette cheese. Watching the waiter pour all that cheese on the burger may have been the best part of the meal. Look at all that cheese!!

The Classic burger was loaded with farmhouse white cheddar, bacon, and their special sauce.

All patty meat is grind fresh for the day making the burgers tender and juicy. Both burgers looked amazing but lacked a little flavor. Overall a great meal.

Chat n’ Chew – Gramercy Park

Happy Halloween!!! We maybe too old to go trick or treating but we’re never too old enough to treat on a delicious burger. So for that we checked out Chat n’ Chew.

Although they only have one burger on the menu. The “Holy Cow Burger” has plenty of different toppings to make it a unique burger every time.

First we tried our burger the classic way. Cheese, onions, lettuce and tomato on top of a beef patty.

Then we switched it up and ditched the cheese for some mushrooms. Great places too sit and catch upon old times. Vintage look and friendly staff. The burgers were good. Juicy and cooked to how we liked it just missing some flavor.

Mayville – Nomad District

Here we go again another burger spot tackled. We’re making progress on our list of names…(GOT reference). This time we checked out Maysville. We kept seeing all the great burger photos and could not resist. Maysville had a nice ambiance, but not so friendly staff. The bartenders were rude, and treated us like they were doing us a favor. Our waiter thought we were just sitting there from happy hour time so he did not approach us. We sat for 5-10 minutes. During that time he worked on the tables that were seated opposite sides, but never acknowledged us. When we hailed him down he apologized and we were finally able to order.

The Maysville burger! Loaded with arugula, american cheese, caramelized onion-bacon puree, sauce 561, and pickles. Served with a side of fries.

The caramelized onions and sauce 561 helped to give the burger taste. Juicy, decorative, and need a little more flavor. You have to admit it’s a beautiful looking burger.

Sadly, first impressions are lasting ones.

Holy Cow – Midtown

Holy cow it’s July already. We headed to midtown in the heat to check out Holy Cow. Known for their vegetarian food options. Thier burgers were also given great reviews. First up was the Holy Cow Burger which was a six ounce short rib, chuck, and brisket blend patty topped with lettuce, tomato, American cheese and their holy sauce.

Next we indulged in their Classic Burger. Which was a quarter pound patty with lettuce, holy sauce, tomato, onions, and American cheese. We wanted to love these burgers because the reviews we great but the burgers were just OK. The patties were juicy and flavorful but the buns were over toasted. The Holy Cow burger was a little more tender but otherwise much like the pictures they tasted the same. Overall the meal was not too bad. We recommend going during off peak hours as there is not a lot of seating space.

Hero Certified Burgers – Upper East Side

It’s been a great first half of the year for super heroes movies and shows. So what better way to celebrate Heroes then checking out Hero Certified Burgers. Originating from Canada. Hero Certified has finally made it’s way to NYC.

With so many burgers on the menu. We went with their Signature burger and Action burger. The Signature burger was loaded with cheddar cheese, relish, red onion, tomato, and their special Hero sauce. The Action burger was an angus beef patty topped with fried onion ring, guacamole, bacon, smoked white cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, and their special sauce on a sesame poppy bun. We had it without guacamole.

The burgers were juicy and held together pretty well. The patties themselves were missing flavor but the Hero sauce and toppings helped.
Overall not a bad meal.

Corner Bistro – West Greenwich Village

The Corner Bistro was on our list of names and we were able to cross them off the list (Game of Thrones reference).

The bistro burger was pretty good. Juicy, the meat crumbles when you bit into it, flavorful. The chiliburger, however was a dud. The meat was tender but it was more chili than burger. The bottom bun was so soggy from the sauce. Better to have eaten it with nachos than a fork.

Burger & Barrel – Soho

You just have to check out a place that’s named Burger & Barrel.  If you’re not memorized by the two beauties above let me explain them.

The Double Barrel is made up of double stack patty, american cheese, crispy onions, and again that special sauce.

The Bash Burger is loaded with caramelized onion & bacon jam, pickles, american cheese, and their special sauce.

In the words of Mary Poppin’s “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.  That’s the best way to describe these burgers.  Can not wait to go back and try the rest of the burgers on their menu. Great place and friendly waiters adding Burger & Barrel to our top list!

The Smith – East Village

The Smith

When you’ve had a long week and just want something comforting, there’s nothing better than a burger. The Smith has the burger you need. The Smith burger is loaded with bacon shallot marmalade, white cheddar, pickles, crispy onions, and special sauce. All on a soft potato bun. What a juicy burger! Flavorful to the last bite. Thank goodness The Smith has many locations to enjoy this delicious burger.

The Spaniard – West Village

We are back! New year, new look. First post of the year goes to… drum roll please… The Spaniard in the West Village! Beautiful looking pub with friendly staff and cozy decor. The Smash burger is all the talk so we had to give it a try.
What’s in it? Double patty, American cheese, lettuce, pickles all on a sesame seed bun. Great looking burger, but to us tasted like a fancy version of the Big Mac at McDonald’s. Don’t get us wrong we love the Big Mac just was expecting more from the Smash burger.

Next on the menu was the Patty Melt, a dry aged patty with cheddar, bacon, pickles…McClure’s Pickles to be exact. Served with balsamic chutney on the side. Pretty good sandwich! Lots of flavor, juice, and that chutney kicked it up a notch.

Over all, the Smash burger and the Patty Melt made for a good meal.
